Kenya Through the Lens – A Photographer's Guide

Dedicated Photo Vehicles

Custom open Land Cruisers with 360-degree shooting angles, beanbag mounts, floor-level perspective hatches, and strict passenger limits ensure unhindered framing at every sighting.

Mastering East Africa requires reading light, animal behavior, and seasonal movement. Curated by expedition leader Vadim Onishchenko, this guide details prime habitats, wildlife timing, and field logistics across Kenya.

/ Key Habitats

Where we photograph

Six distinct ecosystems chosen specifically for their predator concentration, rare regional endemics, dramatic backdrops, and unique photographic perspectives.

Apex Predators
Mountain Horizons
Northern Endemics

Masai Mara

Amboseli

Samburu

Open savannah boasting Africa's highest density of lions, cheetahs, and leopards. Mara River crossings run July to October, while private conservancies grant invaluable off-road access and quiet vehicle counts.

Legendary large tusker elephants parading directly before Mount Kilimanjaro. Renowned for crisp early dawn mountain vistas and dramatic golden dust plumes backlighted by low equatorial sun.

Arid northern terrain home to the Samburu Special Five: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich, alongside territorial leopards stalking the doum palms of Ewaso Nyiro river.

Rift Valley Soda Lake
Freshwater Waterways
Thermal Waters

Lake Nakuru

Lake Naivasha

Lake Bogoria

Rift Valley soda lake sanctuary sheltering vibrant flamingos, endangered white and black rhinos, hyenas hunting along the alkaline shoreline, and rare Rothschild's giraffes in fever tree woodlands.

Calm freshwater lake providing specialized boat-based photography of diving African fish eagles, surfacing hippo pods, white pelicans, and pied kingfishers poised on submerged deadwood.

Dramatic geysers and mineral hot springs framed by massive congregations of lesser flamingos feeding on blue-green algae, alongside deep cultural encounters with Samburu and Tugen pastoralists.

+ Seasonal Timing

When to go – wildlife calendar

Light, vegetation density, and migratory herds determine how we approach photographic shoots in Kenya across the calendar year.

Green Season & Calving
The River Crossings

January: Crisp Light

July–August: Migration Peak

The short dry season delivers lush emerald grasslands, dust-free skies, newborn prey animals, and intense predator interactions. With fewer safari vehicles on the tracks, photographers enjoy pristine, crisp Kilimanjaro horizons at dawn.

Roughly 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra sweep north from the Serengeti into the Masai Mara. Expect thunderous river crossings fraught with Nile crocodiles, active big cats, dry golden savannah grasses, and cinematic ambient dust.

Patience at the Riverbank

The Great Migration explained

Mara River crossings are notoriously unpredictable. Herds gather, hesitate on bluffs, and turn back repeatedly before an alpha leaps. We position vehicles thoughtfully and wait patiently by the river for hours to capture unhurried, decisive action.

The Great Migration is not a singular event but a year-round circular movement between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara, dictated by rainfall patterns and the search for fresh grazing grass.

■ Travel Logistics

Practical information

Essential travel requirements, field conditions, health preparation, and technical specifications for arriving smoothly in Nairobi.

Visa & Entry

Health & Vaccines

Weather & Layering

All international visitors must obtain an official Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) applied online prior to travel.

Consult your doctor or travel clinic regarding malaria prophylaxis and recommended vaccines. A yellow fever certificate may be mandatory depending on routing.

Daytime Mara temperatures range 24–28°C; early morning game drives drop sharply to 10–14°C. Pack warm, windproof fleece layers for open roof hatches at dawn.

Currency & Cash

Time Zone

Electricity & Power

Kenyan Shilling (KES) is the local currency. US Dollars (printed post-2013) are widely accepted across safari lodges, park camps, and internal charters.

East Africa Time runs at GMT+3 year-round, with steady 12-hour equatorial daylight cycles allowing consistent 06:00 to 18:30 shooting routines.

Standard UK Type G 240V plugs are used throughout camps. Our safari vehicles also feature onboard inverters to recharge dual battery banks and laptops between runs.
